Life Lately: August 2023

Looking for hermit crabs by the bay with my little guy.

As I sit down to write this post, I’m the good kind of tired. Every year, we spend the final week of summer on the Cape. It’s my Happy Place, and there is nowhere I would rather be. We arrived this past Saturday, soon after A’s last day of sports class - the last “scheduled” activity of summer. Within moments of arriving, we found ourselves at the beach and I felt the stress and overwhelm and burnout melt away with each passing minute.

I entered August prioritizing rest. I wanted the month to be fun, and playful, and filled with restorative moments. And for the most part, I was successful. The month started with a family pool party, celebrating several August birthdays (it’s a busy month across our extended family). The next week included a MamaConnect discussion focused on family rituals and traditions, a couple playdates, and then my first night away from our house since my surgery - we went to Northfield to celebrate my dad’s birthday. That same weekend, Thomas did a Spartan Race for the first time since the pandemic (and kids!). The next weekend was a double header - we hosted a family birthday party for Adriana on Saturday followed by a kids birthday party for her on Sunday. It was a blast, though I was exhausted. A few days later I helped facilitate a fun Mom’s Night Out with Central Mass Mom, we visited my grandmother, and had our neighborhood end of summer party.

And now, we are here. The days are long and slow-ish (so many kids around), the nights are relaxing-ish (once said kids go to bed), and the vacation energy is just what I need.

Watching/Reading/Listening: This month was one for (mostly) summer reads. I read The Five-Star Weekend, Bad Summer People, and Gift From the Sea. I have a couple books that I’m almost finished with, so will need to include those next month. For shows, I watched The Crowded Room, finished a several month process of watching Big Mouth, laughed along with Based on a True Story, and have almost finished Dead Loch. I listened to my usual podcast lineup - We Can Do Hard Things, Crime Junkie, and Park Predators. My favorite of the month was the two-part episode on the Enneagram with Suzanne Stable.

What I’m Loving: I have been dealing with a couple health-related challenges this month and have been doubling down on my hydration. I’m always loving my two main water bottles: my Stanley and my Yeti. I bought a few extra straws to have on hand which is helpful with a teething boy who likes to drink from mine. I’ve also incorporated Liquid IV on some days, and am enjoying the extra elektrolyte boost. My friend got my hooked on Scout bags a couple years ago, and I just added this one (in a slightly different color that I can’t find) to my rotation.

101 in 1001: I have about six months left for this cycle, so I’m beginning to map out what I can realistically finish, jotting down ideas for my next list, and getting things done. I added a new winery towards my goal (Cape Cod Winery - I had surprisingly never been!), a few books, and printed/framed several types of photos that were on the list. I’m up to 32! The fall should allow me to make progress on a few more, which I’m excited for. Woodstock VT, here we come!

WHAT’S NEXT: I have a lot of exciting things in the works, and hope this new format of sharing them is helpful.
